Protect the children of India!

Child sexual abuse hurts a child’s development and overall maturity, deeply affecting neurobiological systems and endocrinological character is ations. Survivors of child sexual abuse are at a greater risk of developing serious personality disorders.

Child sexual abuse in India is more prevalent than you think or than what meets the eye! News about child rape and child sexual exploitation makes the headlines daily, especially in India. According to multiple statistics and data analysis, it is estimated that about 37% of India’s population includes children under 18 years, with a considerable number of children who do not get access to basic nutrition, education, and access to health services. Around 53% of Indian children have reported having experienced different kinds of sexual abuse, including nude photography, assault, inappropriate touching, and sexual abuse.

Statistics reveal that every 155 minutes, a child under 16 years of age is raped in India. Parents of sexually abused children are frightened to report because of the fear of shame and ridicule in society. Devastatingly true, this crime is committed mostly by individuals known to the children. Instances of family members like the father, brother, cousins, relatives, neighbours, etc. having sexually exploited children always make the rounds but seldom get reported. Child sexual abuse in India threatens the fabric of society and its role in protecting its children.

Sexual abuse is not just raping; several forms of sexual abuse are outlawed and criminal by law. This includes clicking lewd photographs of children, making them watch pornographic content, physically tantalising them, etc. The ordeal of sexual exploitation in children seldom influences the children through life making them feel guilty, fearful, withdrawn and anxious.

Responsible members of society can play an important and active role in the prevention of child sexual abuse in India. We all need to make each member understand that children are unsafe when it comes to sexual exploitation and therefore, it is important to support the victims of child sexual abuse in India. Aligning with the laws and taking it one step further, NGOs like Save the Children have committed themselves to lift children who have been at the receiving end of sexual abuse through services and provision of rehabilitation. They are rightly called the advocates of children’s rights and have served the community by providing all socio-economically backward and vulnerable children with access to education, nutrition, and healthcare benefits and a chance for rehabilitation.
